Apr 10, 2008
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON D.C. - U.S. Congressman Tom Cole (OK-4) announced that Purcell Intermediate School and Purcell Junior High School each received an award of 17 classic books on the theme "Created Equal" from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH).  The book collection is being donated as part of the We the People bookshelf program.

"This literature has been provided to Purcell schools to help students learn more about our nation's history," Congressman Cole said.  "This collection of books will help young readers explore the concepts of equality and liberty that have been sought after throughout our country's history.  The books revolve around a vital American theme - that 'all men are created equal.'"

The NEH's We the People program grant provided these books to encourage the study and understanding of American culture and heritage.  The "Created Equal" collection contains 17 classic books for children of all ages that tell the stories of influential Americans such as Abigail Adams and Abraham Lincoln.  Other books are included to engage young readers and raise awareness about historic issues of liberty and equality.

The NEH is an independent federal agency that exists to support learning in history, literature, philosophy and other areas of humanities.  NEH grants are available to supplement and enrich classroom learning and preserve knowledge at public institutions such as museums and libraries.  For more information about the NEH and the We the People bookshelf program please visit www.neh.gov.
